Litter decomposition can be reduced by pesticide effects on detritivores and decomposers: Implications for tropical stream functioning

چکیده

Understanding which factors affect the process of leaf litter decomposition is crucial if we are to predict changes in functioning stream ecosystems as a result human activities. One major activity with known consequences on streams agriculture, particular concern tropical regions, where forests being rapidly replaced by crops. While pesticides potential drivers reduced rates observed agricultural streams, their specific effects performance decomposers and detritivores mostly unknown. We used microcosm experiment examine individual joint an insecticide (chlorpyrifos) fungicide (chlorothalonil) survival growth (Anchytarsus, Hyalella Lepidostoma), aquatic hyphomycetes (AH) sporulation rate, taxon richness, assemblage structure, rates. Our results revealed detrimental detritivore (which were due strongest for Hyalella), AH richness microbial (mostly response fungicide). Total was especially when combined, suggesting that they operated differently additive. Importantly, greater single-species treatments than 3-species mixture, indicating species loss may exacerbate ecosystem functioning.

No evidence for leaf-trait dissimilarity effects on litter decomposition, fungal decomposers, and nutrient dynamics.

Biodiversity and ecosystem-functioning theory suggest that litter mixtures composed of dissimilar leaf species can enhance decomposition due to species trait complementarity. Here we created a continuous gradient of litter chemistry trait variability within species mixtures to assess effects of litter dissimilarity on three related processes in a natural stream: litter decomposition, fungal bio...

The Effects of Fire Severity on Macroinvertebrate Detritivores and Leaf Litter Decomposition

High severity wildfire events are a feature of forests globally and are likely to be more prevalent with climate change. As a disturbance process, fire has the potential to change important ecological functions, such as decomposition, through its impact on biodiversity. Despite the recognised importance of decomposition in terms of fuel loads and energy flow, little is known about the post-fire...

Composition of riparian litter input regulates organic matter decomposition: Implications for headwater stream functioning in a managed forest landscape

Although the importance of stream condition for leaf litter decomposition has been extensively studied, little is known about how processing rates change in response to altered riparian vegetation community composition. We investigated patterns of plant litter input and decomposition across 20 boreal headwater streams that varied in proportions of riparian deciduous and coniferous trees. We mea...

Chemical communication in competitive interactions among tropical stream detritivores

The role of chemical communication among competitors in streams is virtually unknown, especially in tropical streams. In this study, we experimentally examined the ability of four tropical invertebrate shredders (Anisocentropus kirramus Neboiss 1980, Lectrides varians Mosely 1953, Triplectides gonetalus Moser & Neboiss 1982 and Atalophlebia sp.) to detect and respond to chemical cues from compe...
